A Living Education at Cypress Academy

A young child at home with a yellow sleeve is reading a colorful illustrated book at a table. The child's face is turned away from the camera, focusing on the book.

At Cypress Academy, we believe education is a sacred journey—a forming of hearts, minds, and souls in the light of God’s truth. Our students are born persons, made in His image, capable of wonder, wisdom, and virtue. We pursue a living education shaped by beauty, not busyness; by truth, not mere information; by love, not performance.

Our program is rooted in the classical tradition and nourished by the Charlotte Mason philosophy, drawing students into the Knowledge of God, the Knowledge of Man, and the Knowledge of the Universe. Each day begins with worship and Scripture, flows through rich encounters with literature, art, language, and history, and finds rest in the quiet contemplation of nature.

From our youngest Saplings in early education to our growing Grammar School, Cypress cultivates a love of learning that endures for life—an education that teaches not only what to think, but how to think, to see, and to delight in the beauty of God’s world.

Early Education

“Saplings”

Our Early Education Saplings Program (Jr. K- K) seeks to cultivate students’ natural curiosity and wonder about the world around them. Students in our early education program are prepared with attentive listening, hands on projects, and outdoor nature study. They develop the building blocks of reading and writing through phonemic awareness and practicing the early stages of handwriting. During a typical school day students will practice recitation including scripture memory, hymns, folk songs and memory chants.

“Little Oaks, Cedar, Cypress”

Our Grammar School encompasses three stages:
Little Oaks (Grades 1-2), Cedar (Grades 3-4), and Cypress (Grades  5–6).
During these formative years, students build a strong foundation of knowledge and virtue. Our classes are combined by grade level to foster community and ensure that each child receives instruction suited to their ability. As our academy grows, we look forward to dividing classes individually, while maintaining the collaborative spirit that makes Cypress unique.

Curriculum Plan

  • Our days begin in community with Morning Assembly, centering our hearts on the truth and goodness of God. Through prayer, Scripture reading, psalm singing, hymns, and Scripture memory, students are invited into worshipful rhythms that root the mind in devotion. Together, we journey through The Pilgrim’s Progress, a timeless story that has shaped the Christian imagination for centuries—reminding us that the life of faith is a pilgrimage toward the Celestial City.

  • In the study of humanity, students encounter the beauty of God reflected in human creativity and history. We explore poetry, literature, art, geography, history, fables, and moral tales—reading stories that shape the heart and imagination. Students sing folk songs that carry the memory and emotion of generations, learn the language of Latin and Spanish, and study Shakespeare, myths, legends, and Plutarch’s Lives to see the moral struggles and triumphs of those who came before. Each subject points students to the truth that all beauty and wisdom ultimately flow from the Creator.

  • We believe that nature is the first and best classroom. As George MacDonald wrote, “No doubt the best beginning…is an acquaintance with nature.” Students spend intentional time outdoors, learning to observe, to wonder, and to delight in the created world. Through nature walks, watercolor journaling, and quiet contemplation, they cultivate the habit of attention and the virtue of gratitude. Science and observation lead not merely to information, but to worship—an understanding that the heavens declare the glory of God.

Philosophical Influences

Classical Education

We aspire to create lifelong learners who seek to love and know what is true, good and beautiful. Classical education is the methodology of the Liberal Arts tradition. At Cypress we seek to cultivate students who love to learn.  This is done by “laying a feast” of beautiful ideas, including  academically rich lessons, classical literature, and the study of the arts.

Charlotte Mason

Charlotte Mason was a 19th century education philosopher who firmly believed that education is “an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life”. Charlotte dedicated her life to the idea that children are born persons meaning they should be given a beautiful education that reflects the beauty of their creator. At Cypress, we implement key distinctives of a Charlotte Mason education including:

  • Short rigorous lessons

  • Nature Study

  • Composer Study

  • Art Study

  • The use of “living books” in History, Geography, Art and Composer study, and Language Arts

  • Scripture and Poetry Memorization

  • Narration
